JOB SUMMARY
The Bronx District Attorney’s Office is seeking a well-qualified staff whose diverse backgrounds reflect an ability to serve the over 1.4 million members of the Bronx County community and pursue a safer Bronx through fair justice. The Bronx County District Attorney’s Office has an opening for a Trial Preparation Assistant Lv 1  to support our Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) with all aspects of investigations and trial preparation in the Domestic Violence Bureau.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific duties will include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Prepare and update electronic Orders of Protection during court appearances.
  • Distributes and sorts miscellaneous Orders of Protections from Assistant Chief Criminal Court Clerk to assigned ADAs.
  • Liaison between DVM Court Clerk and Legal Supervisors.
  • During each calendar call, works closely with the presiding DVM Judge and Court Staff in creating and drafting all the electronic orders of protection in the WebDV system.  (This task is extremely fast pace and requires concentration and coordination with the judge and court staff, ensuring each order has the appropriate information, charges, conditions, and correct adjourn date.  If a defendant pleads guilty, the clerk must know the appropriate conditions, charges, and terms of the plea.  The judge and court staff rely on our clerk that the final order is accurate and is in accordance with the record.  This task must be completed in an expeditious manner so that the order may be reviewed and executed by the Judge and the defendant before leaving court).  
  • Assists our legal staff in court; by researching any missing cases in BXDA.
  •  Coordinates advancing cases on the calendar.
  • Retrieves executed subpoenas and other pertinent documents from the presiding Judge and Court Clerk on behalf of the assigned Assistants.  
  • Obtains the Court Calendar for the next day from the DVM Court Clerk’s office and updates with the assigned assistant information.  
  • Emails the assigned assistant that they have an upcoming case on the DVM Court Calendar. 
  • Consults with the DVM Judge to fix any clerical errors.
  • Receives and reviews all the electronic copies of the orders of protection that were created from the court staff. 
  • Matches and attaches all OOPs with the corresponding file in BXDA.
  • Maintains an Excel spreadsheet corresponding with the day’s court calendar, including all pertinent information (i.e., adjourn dates, pleas, bench warrants, dismissals, etc.) are entered.  
  • Assists Division Executive with logging and tracking all DV DPs (Decline to Prosecute).  
  • At the direction of the Court, emails the fully executed OOP to the assigned Assistant and all appropriate parties, including defense counsel, and complaining witnesses.  
  • Distributes any correspondence to the assigned Professional Staff Team Members to email any correspondence, orders of protection and or notices to appear, to victims and or witnesses.   
  • Attends stakeholder meetings with Bureau Chief, Legal Supervisors, Judge and DVM Court Staff.  
  • Maintains contact with Judge’s Court Attorney.
  • Obtain certified documents and Order of Protection.
  • Write correspondence letters, send Orders of Protection to victims.
  • Ability to Prepare Affidavits of service.
  • Coordinates contact with NYPD and Legal staff, when needed i.e. obtain DD5s. Memo book entries. Subpoena FDNY/NYPD records i.e. Ambulance Call Reports (ACRs).
  • Following up/serve subpoenas to various Hospitals/Agencies etc.
  • Submit requests for 911 calls/Sprint reports/Radio runs to NYPD Tapes and Records Dept.
  • Obtain and Listen to Riker’s calls.
  •  Assists Compliant room, preparing discovery and posting on the shared drive
  • Subpoena phone records from various carriers.
  • All other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An Associate’s degree or a High School diploma/GED and a minimum of two (2) years working experience in a law firm, governmental agency, civic or community organization.
  • A valid New York State driver’s license with a minimum of two (2) years of driving experience is required and must be maintained for the duration of employment
  • Familiarity and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with general court services preferred
  • Ability to communicate in a welcoming and professional manner
  • Excellent customer service skills
