JOB SUMMARY:

The Bronx District Attorney is seeking an experienced attorney (10+ years) to serve as Bureau Chief of the Office’s Domestic Violence (DV) Bureau. The DV Bureau investigates and prosecutes all felonies and misdemeanors involving and related to intimate partner abuse, The Bureau, under a vertical prosecution model, includes the Domestic Violence Complaint Unit (DVCU) where DV cases are drafted by DV Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs). The Bureau works closely with the Office’s Crime Victim’s Assistance Unit (CVAU) where social workers, counselors and therapists provide victims with needed advocacy and support. The Bureau also works collaboratively with the Bronx Family Justice Center, which is located on the same floor and provides services for victims of domestic violence, elder abuse and sex trafficking. Reporting to the Special Victims Division Chief, the Chief of the Domestic Violence Bureau will serve as the leader of the Bureau, overseeing a management team, ADAs and support staff, and will be responsible for the investigation and prosecution of DV cases, and the administration of the DV Bureau and the DVCU.
 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Develop and implement prosecution strategies to aid in the effective handling of DV cases in Bronx County.
  2. Manage, direct, and supervise approximately 40 to 50 ADAs, including supervisory legal staff, in the investigation and prosecution of domestic violence cases.
  3. Work closely with an Administrative Supervisor in overseeing approximately 20 support staff members in the Bureau.
  4. Supervise the day-to-day of the Bureau staff which includes, but is not limited to, attendance, development, and training.
  5. Oversee the assignment of DV investigations and cases, and engage in regular Case Reviews.
  6. Oversee and work on the expansion of the DVCU into nights and weekends.
  7. Motivate, organize and direct all levels of staff in various responsibilities, while promoting and maintaining a positive and cohesive working environment.
  8. Collaborate regularly with other agencies including, but not limited to, NYPD, the Family Justice Center, the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence and Safe Horizon, which includes developing, implementing and conducting Trainings, and representing the Office in interagency committees and meetings.
  9. Serve on the faculty for the Office’s Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs, including Orientation Training for new Assistants, Grand Jury Training, and both Felony and Misdemeanor Trial Training programs.
  10. Prepare case status and statistical reports, as required.
  11. Report to the Special Victims Division Chief regarding the effective management and productivity of the Bureau.
  12. Perform all other related duties and projects as designated.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A Juris-Doctorate degree, 10 plus years of trial experience or the equivalent and 5 plus years of prior management experience preferred.
  2. At least three years of experience in the prosecution of Special Victim cases, which includes cases involving intimate partners.
  3. Firm knowledge of and experience with New York’s Penal Law and Criminal Procedure Law.
  4. Excellent working knowledge of investigative methods.
  5. Understand and respond clearly and effectively (oral/written) to complex legal issues.
  6. Excellent people skills and positive demeanor.
  7. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  8. Excellent presentation and organizational skills.
  9. Ability to exercise good judgment and strong ethics.
  10. Ability to analytically solve issues or problems from inception through conclusion.

US Citizenship and New York State Residency are required. Salary is commensurate with experience.
