JOB SUMMARY:

The Bronx District Attorney is seeking an experienced attorney (15+ years) with outstanding management/supervisory skills to lead the Trial Division. The Trial Division is the largest division in the office and is comprised of the Homicide Bureau, Vehicular Crimes Unit, 6 Trial Bureaus, Hate Crimes Unit, Grand Jury Practice, Desk Appearance Ticket Unit, Complaint/ Arraignment and Extraditions Unit. The Chief must be capable of demonstrating the successful management of supervisors; senior staff, and administrators. The position calls for strong skills in resolving complex problems and issues professionally and fairly. The Chief should have recent felony trial experience and strong knowledge of the Bronx courts and criminal justice system.
 

The Trial Division handles all types of cases, from harassment to homicides, including the felony, homicide and complaint room 24 hour duty schedules. The Division Chief must be proficient and innovative in addressing city and state-wide crime initiatives and crime reduction strategies. The Trial Bureaus prosecute any felony or misdemeanor case that is not handled by a specialized bureau. In consultation with the Vehicular Crimes Unit, trial bureaus also handle vehicle cases, including driving while intoxicated felonies, driving with a suspended license felonies and vehicular assaults. The Homicide Bureau investigates and prosecutes fatalities and major cases. The Hate Crimes Unit handles crimes committed based upon race, color, national origin, ancestry, gender, religion, religious practices, age, disability, sexual orientation or gender identification, regardless of whether the belief or perception of the defendant is correct.
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Chief of the Trial Division serves on the Bronx District Attorney’s Executive Staff. The ideal candidate must be a person that embodies the District Attorney’s vision and goals, is seeking a challenge, has experience in all of the aforementioned areas, and is sensitive to the unique needs and dynamics of County prosecution.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Specific duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Overall management and supervision of the Trial Division.

  2. Work closely with Bureau/Unit Chiefs and executive leadership to create, develop and administer policy.

  3. Proficient in current investigating techniques and case enhancement methods but seeks out best practices locally and nationally.

  4. Outstanding communication skills across all levels of an organization including internally and externally.

  5. Conduct in-depth case review and conferences.

  6. Extensive knowledge of the criminal justice system at the judicial and executive levels.

  7. Ability to organize, motivate, direct, coach and evaluate all levels of staff in various responsibilities.

  8. Must understand and respond clearly and effectively (oral/written) to complex legal issues.

  9. Work cooperatively with a large and diverse staff

  10. Participate in training for office personnel and outside agencies

  11. Participate and take the lead on legislative committees, interacting with members of the community and external agencies

  12. Preside over Bureau/Unit meetings as needed

  13. Perform all other related duties and projects as designated

    PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
     

  14. A Juris Doctorate degree, 15+ years of experience and 8 years of management experience
    US Citizenship and New York State Residency are required. Salary is commensurate with experience.
