JOB SUMMARY:
The Rape Crisis Program seeks to aid sexual assault survivors immediately after a sexual assault has occurred in an effort to lessen the long term effects of sexual assault. The Domestic Violence advocate will reach out and meet with survivors, make an assessment and devise a plan in place that responds to the needs of the survivor. As this program is positioned in the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, the Domestic Violence Victim Advocate will assist the survivor in navigating the process and procedures within the criminal justice system. However, services are not only provided when there is an arrest, services are not contingent upon arrest. Crisis and supportive services are provided nonetheless. The Domestic Violence Victim Advocate will be a member of the Crime Victims Assistance Unit (CVAU) a subdivision of the Special Victims Division, and will report directly to the Senior Sexual Assault Victim Advocate, under the overall authority of the Director of CVAU. The Domestic Violence Victim Advocate will work as part of a team and will work closely with other members of CVAU and the Child Abuse Sex Crimes Bureau.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide crisis intervention, advocacy, referrals, orientation on criminal justice process, victim’s entitlements and prepares letters
- Maintains follow-up contact, providing ongoing services and plans for short and long term goals
- Maintains and submits accurate and timely work logs, client records and statistical reports
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Specific duties will include, but are not limited to the following:
- Contact victims, scheduling appointments, conduct assessments and provide ongoing therapy as needed
- Referrals to appropriate services and ongoing collaboration with other professionals
- Has frequent contact with Assistant District Attorneys and other professionals to meet client needs
- Attends taskforce meetings, Information Fairs, and other meetings as directed
- All other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATION REQUIRMENTS/PREFERRED SKILLS:
- A baccalaureate degree preferred or a high school diploma with two (2) years of work experience in a law firm, governmental agency, civic or community organization
- Fluent Spanish speaker preferred
- Past advocacy experience with victims of domestic violence
- Knowledge of the neighborhoods and population of Bronx County preferred
- Familiarity with general court services and functions preferred
- Ability to work in a fast-paced high volume professional environment
