Description
JOB SUMMARY:
The Legal Assistants will provide support to the Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) in handling direct communication with witnesses on new Domestic Violence (DV) cases. This role will take an expedited approach to the drafting of cases.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Self-starter with the ability to function independently; reliability and follow-up are of the utmost importance
  2. Ability to effectively and professionally communicate and interact with supervisors, colleagues, law enforcement, District Attorney and court personnel, and other agencies
  3. Deftly organize and process a high volume of cases
  4. Utilize excellent time management skills while working in a fast paced environment
  5. Excellent computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Specific duties will include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Interview victims and Police Officer witnesses in order to obtain background and contact information.
  • Refer victims to service providers when appropriate.
  • Obtain all necessary documents from NYPD and other agencies to aid in case assessment and processing.
  • Draft the various forms that are required for arraignments.
  • Coordinate with ADAs and managers.
  • Assist with drafting of low-level and non-violent complaints or decline to prosecute cases (DPs) under the direct supervision of the Complaint Unit Supervisor
  • Assist with other unit tasks and perform all other duties as assigned.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • A baccalaureate degree preferred OR a High School diploma/GED AND prior work experience in a law firm or governmental agency High level of attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills
  • Familiarity with general court procedures, services, and functions preferred
  • Familiarity with the Criminal Justice system and court functions preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Note: Due to the necessary service needs of this position, the selected candidates will be required to work nights, weekends and holidays.
